Violence in Charlottesville is a Product of NRA/Trump Hateful Rhetoric
Charlottesville, VA (August 12, 2017) — Violence erupted today in Charlottesville, Virginia as white supremacist groups viciously attacked counter-protesters. The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) extends our deepest condolences to all those affected by this horrific violence.
In order to prevent such violence, we must confront two realities: the racism and bigotry festering in our nation and the violent insurrectionist philosophy perpetuated by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and Donald Trump. The idea that political violence is a legitimate avenue of redress threatens our democracy. We can no longer stand by and let bigotry and insurrectionism destroy our nation.
Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Virginia State Director Lori Haas issued the following statement:
“The violence we saw today in Charlottesville is the result of the dangerous rhetoric and hate speech that the NRA and Trump have promoted. The symbiotic relationship between the NRA, Trump, and America’s far right hate groups cannot be ignored. Many of the white supremacist militia groups involved in today’s violence were legally open carrying assault rifles. This alone indicates their willingness to use intimidation and deadly force to advance their hateful agenda.
“For the last six months, the NRA has encouraged violence against progressive protesters, liberal politicians, and the media. That violent rhetoric has now become reality. Trump’s refusal to specifically repudiate white supremacists’ use of political violence confirms that Trump and the NRA tacitly approve of political violence against their dissenters.
“After today’s tragedy, it is clear that we must act vigorously and peacefully to counter political violence, white supremacy, hate, insurrectionism, and the NRA, who advocates arming hateful, dangerous individuals. We will not be intimidated.”
