Trump Ignores Gun Violence in State of the Union Address

“Tonight, gun violence survivors, activists, and family members from all over the nation were invited by members of Congress to witness President Trump’s State of the Union address. But despite their presence, and despite the proximity to the first anniversary of the tragic mass shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, President Trump largely neglected to mention the issue of gun violence.

“Instead of focusing on the real crisis of American gun violence — an epidemic that killed nearly 40,000 Americans in 2017 — the president focused on his imaginary border crisis.

“Not one person affected by gun violence wanted to be in the House chamber tonight. They wanted to be home with their children, their spouses, their loved ones. They came to show the nation that these are the faces of American gun violence — and they deserved more from the president.”
