We Have the Tools to Stop the Next Parkland Shooting
Inaction is no longer an option, here are steps legislatures can take today
Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Executive Director Josh Horwitz issued the following statement:
“The time for empty gestures is over. Now is the time for action. Here are two efforts that lawmakers can take right now to help prevent the next tragedy from happening in their hometown.
“The Parkland shooter was known to be dangerous and well armed. Florida — and every other state — should have a law in place to remove guns from dangerous people before a tragedy occurs. Laws that exist in California, Oregon, Washington, and Connecticut give family members and law enforcement the ability to work with a judge and temporarily remove guns from a person who is a danger to self or others. It is time to give this tool to the rest of America.
“AR-15 assault rifles have become the official gun of American mass shooters. These weapons serve one purpose — to kill as many people as possible in a short amount of time. It is time for Congress to seriously consider re-implementing the ban on assault rifles. How many Americans must die before we remove these weapons of war from our streets?
“We demand our elected officials listen to the will of the people. It is time to lead. If our politicians can’t do that, we believe that American voters will replace them with ones who can.”
