Washington, DC—The gruesome images of San Bernardino are an all-too-familiar reminder of the price our society is paying because dangerous people have easy access to firearms. We grieve for these families. No one should have to go through such horrors. We can stop this, and we will.

Federal authorities are reporting that the two assault rifles used in the attack were purchased by a third party who is now under investigation. With limited exceptions, the state of California prohibits residents from owning assault weapons.

Some of the most dangerous people in our society are being allowed to buy military-style firepower to outfit horrific acts of mass murder.  The gun lobby argues shamelessly that this carnage is the price we pay for freedom, but we can not—we must not—accept this dangerous rationalization as an excuse for unfettered access to guns. James Madison, the original author of the Second Amendment, wrote in the Federalist Papers: “Liberty may be endangered by the abuse of liberty as well as by the abuses of power … The former rather than the latter is apparently most to be apprehended by the United States.”

It is time for bold political leadership. Let us dispense with the corrupt politics of the past. We must break the political power of the National Rifle Association for good.

We can do this. We’ve done greater in our time. Let’s not waste a minute. If we want this bad enough for our children and those we love, let us resolve to make constant contact with our elected officials to hold them accountable for their votes on this issue.  There is too much at stake not to.

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) seeks to secure freedom from gun violence through research, strategic engagement and effective policy advocacy. CSGV can be found on Facebook and Twitter.
