Ralph Northam is Right Choice for Governor
Washington, DC (May 10, 2017) — The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence enthusiastically endorses Ralph Northam for Governor of Virginia. Northam has been a steadfast supporter of gun violence prevention and longtime ally of our organization.
As a state senator from a conservative rural district, Northam met with Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Virginia State Director Lori Haas and other families affected by the Virginia Tech shooting shortly following the 2007 tragedy. At that meeting, Northam committed to fight for stronger gun laws in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and his position has not wavered over the last decade.
When a universal background checks bill came before the Virginia Senate in 2009, Northam courageously voted in favor of the bill despite political pressure. He went on to win re-election in 2011 before being elected Lieutenant Governor of Virginia in 2013. During both campaigns, he ran and won on a strong gun violence prevention platform.
In his race for governor, Northam has continued his strong support for a safer Virginia. As a doctor, Northam has seen the dangerous effects of guns up close, and as an elected official he has used his position to fight for stronger gun laws. He has a proven record of standing up and speaking out on this vital issue while others have stayed silent. His support for gun violence prevention has never been a political talking point, because Ralph Northam views the issue as a moral obligation to his constituents. We are proud to support his campaign.
