Permitless Carry Dies On Virginia Senate Floor

Richmond, VA— Permitless concealed carry in the home state of the National Rifle Association (NRA) is dead once again. Senator Emmett Hanger (R-24) crossed party lines to ensure that the irresponsible legislation once again would not make its way off the Senate floor. Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Virginia State Director Lori Haas,an ever-present figure around the General Assembly, encouraged the defeat of this legislation. Today, she issued the following statement:

“The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence applauds the bipartisan defeat of this irresponsible and dangerous legislation. Thanks to the bravery of Senator Hanger and his concern for the safety of his constituents and law enforcement, the gun lobby’s permitless carry dream in the commonwealth has been defeated once again. We appreciate his leadership.

“Senator Dick Black, on the other hand, has been carrying water for the gun lobby by sponsoring this legislation for years. He once again returns to his allies at the NRA and Virginia Citizens Defense League empty-handed. To add insult to injury, Senator Black’s views on this issue are so out of touch with the views of his constituents that he has been forced to resign instead of inevitably losing his seat in November.

“Today’s defeat is important, but our movement is looking for more. In November, we will elect leaders who will not only defeat bad gun laws but champion stronger laws to keep our families and children safe.”
