Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Executive Director Josh Horwitz issued the following statement:
“Today, the New York State Assembly passed A. 8976 to establish an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO). ERPO provides an evidence-based mechanism for families and law enforcement to temporarily remove guns from a risky situation before it becomes lethal by utilizing the best research available. Family members are usually the first to recognize when a loved one is in crisis, ERPO allows them to seek help — with the gun out of the picture.
“The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) applauds the New York State Assembly on their passage of this bill. Every New York lawmaker should commit to keeping their constituents safe. This law would do exactly that. The Assembly has done their job, it is now time for the Senate to follow their lead and provide the Empire State with this vital tool to prevent future gun violence.”
