Merrick Garland Uniquely Suited to Lead Department of Justice
As domestic terrorism and insurrectionism have emerged as the top threat to America, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence urges Senate to confirm Judge Garland as Attorney General
WASHINGTON — As Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination for U.S. Attorney General advances to the full Senate, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Executive Director Josh Horwitz joins senators from both parties in supporting confirmation:
“Judge Merrick Garland is uniquely suited to address the fundamental challenges to our nation and democratic institutions from domestic terrorism and insurrectionism. He also understands the immediate need for life-saving gun violence prevention policies.
“Judge Garland’s record prosecuting and countering domestic terrorism and insurrectionism mirrors the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence’s commitment to ending the dangerous ideology spread by the gun lobby that puts forth violence as an appropriate response to political differences. Ending the threat of armed rebellion against the government of the United States by its own citizens — as the nation witnessed on January 6 — must be the Justice Department’s highest priority. Judge Garland has demonstrated the commitment and experience needed to address these threats, having prosecuted the Oklahoma City bombing, the Unabomber case, and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics attack as Deputy Assistant Attorney General in the 1990s. “During his confirmation hearings, Judge Garland indicated he is prepared to treat the January 6 attack on the U.S. Capitol with the same gravity, calling the Capitol insurrection ‘the most heinous attack on the democratic process that I’ve ever seen.’ Judge Garland’s understanding of the urgency of this moment, and the depth of his experience prosecuting domestic terrorism, are exactly why the Senate must confirm his nomination without delay.”
“Judge Garland also illustrated at his hearing that he had a clear understanding that we are still an imperfect nation; one that hasn’t achieved equal justice under the law for all Americans. He acknowledged the reality of systemic injustice, stating, ‘There is discrimination and widespread disparate treatment of communities of color and other ethnic minorities in this country.’ Following four years of a Department of Justice that treated lawful protestors unjustly and perpetuated systemic racism, Judge Garland appears to understand that the pledge of allegiance’s promise of ‘Justice for All’ has never been fully applied. He is the right person to take difficult but vital steps toward justice — real justice for all.
“The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence is encouraged by Judge Garland’s support for Extreme Risk Protection Order laws. Our organization has helped to develop, pass and implement this policy in 19 states across the country; I look forward to partnership with the future Attorney General as more states around the nation look to pass these life-saving laws. We are hopeful that Judge Garland’s support for gun violence prevention will extend to strengthening the many ways the Department of Justice is empowered to address the community gun violence epidemic facing our country, including police violence.
“We enthusiastically endorse Judge Merrick Garland’s nomination and encourage all senators to vote in favor of his confirmation as Attorney General.”
