|Washington, DC—The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence (CSGV) is calling on the National Rifle Association (NRA) to remove Ted Nugent from its Board of Directors following a series of anti-Semitic postings by the rock musician on Facebook yesterday.
Nugent posted a meme entitled “So who is really behind gun control?” that depicts the faces of several prominent Jewish-American leaders who have supported tougher gun laws. Each individual is emblazoned with an Israeli flag and a conspiratorial caption (i.e., former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg is labeled as a “9/11 Israeli agent”). Nugent added his own message to the meme, which read:
The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) described Nugent’s post as “nothing short of conspiratorial anti-Semitism” and requested that he take it down immediately. Instead, Nugent responded with two new anti-Semitic postings. In the first, he described critics of his original posting as “superFreaks” and “racist prejudiced POS” and wrote, “I adjust my yamika at my barmitzva playing my kosher guitar.”
In the second, Nugent posted a meme that contained a black and white photograph of Nazis subjugating Jews during the Second World War. The caption on the meme reads, “Back when I was in school, I remember thinking, ‘How did Hitler get MILLIONS of people to follow along blindly and not fight back?’ Then I realized I am watching my fellow Americans take the same path.” Nugent added his own message to the post, which reads, “Soulless sheep to slaughter. Not me.”
Nugent has served on the NRA Board for more than 20 years now despite a long history of racist rhetoric that dates back decades. Most of his attacks have focused on African Americans. Nugent has declared, “Apartheid isn’t that cut and dry. All men are not created equal.” He has also described President Barack Obama as a “subhuman mongrel” and “chimpass punk.” During this period, there has never been any movement to remove Nugent from the Board, either among the NRA leadership or rank and file.
“It is sickening that the NRA continues to give this bigot a seat at the table among their leaders,” said CSGV Executive Director Josh Horwitz. “The fact that Nugent is a featured player at virtually every national event the organization conducts also suggests that they not only condone his views, but also agree with them. If they want to clarify that record, they had better remove him from their Board of Directors immediately.”
CSGV has launched a petition calling on the NRA to remove Nugent from their Board of Directors. It can be signed here.
