Delaware Becomes Latest State to Adopt Life Saving Extreme Risk Law

Dover, DE (June 27, 2018) — Today, Governor John Carney became the latest governor to sign an extreme protection risk order (ERPO) bill into law. Extreme risk laws have seen broad bipartisan support since the Valentine’s Day shooting in Parkland, Florida.

Extreme risk laws allow family members and law enforcement to petition a court to temporarily remove and prohibit purchase and possession of guns from an individual who is displaying signs of dangerous behavior.

Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Legislative Director Christian Heyne attended the bill signing of this important legislation.

“Delaware becomes the seventh state to pass an extreme risk law since Parkland. The bipartisan support it has gathered has been remarkable — in Delaware’s legislature it passed without one vote of opposition. The life-saving effects of extreme risk laws are backed up by data and lawmakers recognize the importance of such legislation in protecting the lives of their constituents.” said Heyne in a statement.

The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence applauds Governor Carney for signing this vital legislation.
