CSGV STATEMENT ON MS. MAGAZINE DECISION TO PUBLISH “MY MONTH WITH A GUN” SERIES
Washington, DC—Yesterday afternoon, Ms. Magazine issued a statement indicating that it had reversed an earlier decision to cancel a series of articles by gun violence prevention activist Heidi Yewman. We applaud them for that decision. The series in question, “My Month with a Gun,” described how Heidi purchased a handgun and obtained a permit to carry it in public despite having absolutely no experience or training with firearms. The first article in the series, which Ms. Magazine published, drew a series of angry and threatening comments from pro-gun activists who did not like the fact that Heidi was revealing gaping loopholes in America’s gun laws. To the astonishment of many, Ms. Magazine responded by canceling Heidi’s series, claiming they could not adequately moderate the comments in question.

CSGV launched a petition in response, calling on Ms. Magazine to stand with Heidi and publish her remaining two articles. In just one day, it garnered more than 1,700 signatures and generated significant media attention.

We would like thank Ms. Magazine for offering to reinstate Heidi’s series. As we noted in our petition, cheap threats and intimidation should never be allowed to silence important and authentic voices. Few voices in the gun violence prevention movement are more important than Heidi’s. For well over a decade, she has been working tirelessly to reduce the carnage and suffering caused by gun violence. All Americans concerned about this problem should be pleased that her words will now be accorded the respect and attention they deserve.
