Gun Violence Prevention Group Welcomes Biden Announcement of Critical New Tools to Stop Gun Violence

CSGV: New policies to address the epidemic of gun violence must be implemented equitably

WASHINGTON — In response to today’s announcement of the Biden-Harris administration’s comprehensive strategy to prevent and respond to gun violence, Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Executive Director Josh Horwitz issued the following statement:

“Today’s announcement shows that President Biden is collaboratively working with a diverse set of stakeholders to provide critical new tools to address our country’s epidemic of gun violence. This balanced and multifaceted strategy follows the public health model, which is imperative to reducing gun violence. Specifically, we are encouraged that the administration is looking to stem the flow of illegal guns, as well as increase investment for violence interruption and prevention programs.

“As we welcome Biden’s balanced approach, we will be watching to ensure the administration’s efforts will be implemented with the appropriate equity considerations, as the communities which are being disproportionately impacted by gun violence also have strained relationships with law enforcement due to ongoing police brutality rooted in systemic inequity. And while we recognize law enforcement may need additional resources to effectively implement this plan, we must also see sustained community investments over time and should never fall back on the failed ‘tough on crime’ policies that continue to over-police communities of color.

“We thank the Biden administration for taking these actions that will make Americans safer and call on Congress to address this epidemic by passing comprehensive gun violence prevention legislation including background checks, extreme risk laws, gun suicide prevention policies, and funding for community violence prevention programs.”
