The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Endorses For The People Act

Americans deserve a government that works for them; H.R. 1 should be passed with bipartisan support and signed into law

Washington, DC (January 4, 2019) — This morning, the Democratic House majority introduced their first legislative priority of the 116th Congress.

H.R. 1, the For the People Act, will return power to the American people. For too long, those serving in government have not represented the views of the American people due to unfair practices and policies. A perfect example of this dynamic is the fact that gun violence prevention proposals supported by 90 percent of the American public have repeatedly been ignored by recent congresses.

Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Legislative Director Christian Heyne issued the following statement:

“H.R. 1 is the perfect piece of legislation to begin this historic session of Congress.

“Corrupt forces in our electoral process have operated by their own rules for far too long. They have gerrymandered their districts to choose their voters, rather than the other way around. They have intentionally made it more difficult for Americans to vote. They have allowed dark money to saturate and influence our political system. This is not democracy.

“The dark money that corrupts politicians and tilts the scales in favor of special interests must be addressed. And no money is darker than the funds funneled from the National Rifle Association (NRA) headquarters to the pockets of politicians in Washington. The past year, we have seen increased concerns about who is funding the NRA. This is a question that must be answered.

The For the People Act can answer such questions about dark money and curtail corruption. The American people deserve a government that works for them. We strongly encourage the passage of H.R. 1.”
