Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Calls on Governor Northam to Resign

“We were shocked and disgusted at the photo that surfaced early Friday evening. This is not the Ralph Northam that we have gotten to know and work closely with over the years. We can say with confidence that throughout our years working with Ralph as a state senator, lieutenant governor, and governor, we have never witnessed him express any racist or bigoted views. But that does not excuse the photo that we all saw late yesterday.

“As governor, Ralph fully committed his administration to addressing Virginia’s gun violence epidemic — including the day-to-day shootings in communities most directly impacted by gun violence. We appreciate the work he has done to bring this issue into the mainstream in Virginia.

“But the photo uncovered must not be ignored. It is hurtful and inexcusable. While we do not believe that this is the man that Ralph Northam is today, this racist photo from his past has gravely shaken the faith that so many Virginians have placed in him. Therefore, the Coalition to Stop Gun Violence calls for his resignation. We trust that he will do the right thing for Virginia and the nation.”
