The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Applauds Kentucky’s Bipartisan Hearing on Extreme Risk Protection Orders
Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Director of State Affairs Jen Pauliukonis issued the following statement:
“In our divided country, bipartisan compromise so often feels like a distant memory. Especially on the issue of gun violence prevention, the American people are told repeatedly by their officials and media that both sides are dug in and change is never going to happen.
“Today, a small bipartisan group of Kentucky Senators are pushing back on that myth. Senators Paul Hornback, Julie Racque Adams, and Morgan McGarvey — two Republicans and a Democrat — are working with local gun violence organization WhitneyStrong to hold an Interim Joint Hearing on the advancement of an Extreme Risk Protection Order bill in the Bluegrass State.
“Recently highlighted on 60 Minutes, an Extreme Risk Protection Order (ERPO) is an innovative tool that allows family members and law enforcement officials to petition a judge to temporarily remove firearms from an individual in crisis. ERPO laws allows those who are a threat to themselves and/or others to get help and heal without access to lethal weapons.
“These life-saving laws are already in 17 states and the District of Columbia. They have shown to be effective in reducing gun deaths — particularly firearm suicide. This policy could meaningfully address the gun suicide epidemic that resulted in the deaths of 470 Kentuckians in 2017.
“The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence applauds this hearing as a meaningful step forward for this important bill that can save lives in Kentucky.”
