Bipartisan Bill Brings Extreme Risk Laws to Federal Level

Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Legislative Director Christian Heyne issued the following statement:

“The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence applauds Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) for introducing the Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2018.

“The data has shown that extreme risk laws have been successful in reducing American gun deaths. They are currently available in five states — with Florida sending a potential sixth to Governor Rick Scott’s desk yesterday. These laws provide family members and law enforcement a tool to petition a court for the temporary removal of guns for an individual in crisis.

“As Senator Graham mentioned at the announcement today, Congress doing nothing is no longer an option. The Blumenthal/Graham bill would allow for family members in states without these laws to petition a federal court. This bill would help reduce gun deaths — homicides and suicides — across the nation.

“While CSGV believes it is imperative that states should take action to implement their own Extreme Risk Protection Order laws, this bipartisan legislation is certainly a step in the right direction.”
