An Overdue Discussion on American Gun Violence

Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Legislative Director Christian Heyne issued the following statement:

“For nearly a decade, our legislators have avoided a House Congressional hearing on the epidemic of American gun violence. Today, that changed.

“H.R. 8 — the Bipartisan Background Checks Act of 2019 — will establish universal background checks on all gun sales in America. This is long overdue and is supported by 97 percent of the American public. H.R. 8 should be passed by the House and brought up for a vote in the Senate as soon as possible.

“H.R. 8 is critically important, but we know we must do more. Universal background checks must be the foundation upon which successful life-saving gun violence prevention policies are built — policies like extreme risk laws for every state, a nationwide assault weapons ban, and removing guns from dangerous abusers and stalkers. H.R. 8 is not the end of this discussion — it is only the beginning.”
