After Las Vegas, Ed Gillespie Owes Virginians an Explanation
Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Virginia State Director Lori Haas Calls on Gillespie to Release his NRA Questionnaire Answers
Coalition to Stop Gun Violence Virginia State Director Lori Haas issued the following statement:
“The National Rifle Association (NRA) and politicians beholden to them bear responsibility for tragedies like the one we saw in Las Vegas this week. By opposing commonsense policies to prevent gun violence and advancing an extremist, guns-everywhere agenda, the NRA and their allies — like Virginia gubernatorial candidate Ed Gillespie — have blood on their hands.
“Candidates like Gillespie, who has an ‘A’ rating from the NRA, often cite ‘respect for the Second Amendment’ as the reason for their high marks. But respecting the Second Amendment is not the same as supporting guns in K-12 schools, expanding Stand Your Ground laws, and opposing an assault weapons ban. These are extremist policies — and they are all on the NRA’s 2017 Virginia Candidate Questionnaire. If Gillespie ‘aced’ this questionnaire, we can easily conclude he is in lockstep with the NRA and their toxic policies — policies that endanger all of us across the Commonwealth.
“We must demand accountability and transparency from our politicians. In the wake of the deadliest mass shooting in American history, Gillespie must disclose his answers on the 2017 NRA Questionnaire. Virginians deserve to know where Gillespie stands on these dangerous policies. We deserve to know whether his loyalty is to Virginians or to the NRA.”
