As America is working to combat the COVID-19 pandemic, another threat is emerging: armed extremism and insurrectionism — the violent revolt against one’s government.
Protests organized by extremist gun organizations and promoted by the National Rifle Association (NRA) and allies in conservative circles are a rejection of public safety and a direct assault on our democratic ideals and the rule of law. The presence of guns at these protests are no accident. They are meant to intimidate democratically elected officials into rejecting the public safety guidelines laid out by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
In 2009, our Executive Director Josh Horwitz co-authored Guns, Democracy, and the Insurrectionist Idea, an analysis of how the gun lobby’s insurrectionist ideology threatens democratic institutions and individual liberty. Unfortunately, we are now seeing many of the things he wrote about come true. It is time to send a message that we will not be intimidated and that extremists will not use violence to subvert our American democracy.
