NEW CSGV PETITION CALLS ON REP. YOUNG TO RE-SWEAR OATH TO CONSTITUTION

Washington, DC—The Coalition to Stop Gun Violence has created a petition at SignOn.org that calls on Rep. Don Young (R-AK) to re-swear his oath to the U.S. Constitution because he endorsed a document drafted by a militia leader recently indicted for plotting to kill law enforcement and government officials.

On April 13, 2009, Rep. Young—a board member of the National Rifle Association—signed a "Letter of Declaration" drafted by Schaeffer Cox of the Second Amendment Task Force/Alaska Peacekeepers Militia calling for insurrection against the U.S. government. On March 10, 2011, five members of the Second Amendment Task Force/Alaska Peacemakers Militia were arrested on charges of conspiracy to commit murder and kidnapping. The group, led by Cox, 27, had stockpiled firearms and munitions and was planning to kill multiple Alaska State Troopers and a federal judge. Cox had previously stated that “our government is sliding into tyranny, a police state” and boasted that law enforcement authorities “know we’ve got ‘em outmanned and outgunned.”

CSGV's petition calls on Rep. Young to immediately re-swear his oath to our Constitution and repudiate the "Letter of Declaration." It also calls on NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre to publicly repudiate the letter and Young's signing of it.
